Are you looking to optimize your Mac for gaming? Here’s what you should do!

While the Mac platform is widely used for professional work, realistically we also end up using it to play videogames on it, at least sometimes. The problem is that Macs aren’t really made specifically for gaming. Not all games are optimized or even present on a Mac. However, more and more developers provide a Mac version. And that’s why it makes a lot of sense to optimize your Mac for gaming.

What Mac configuration should you consider when you want to play games?

If you choose to play videogames on a Mac, it does make sense to try and ensure that you have plenty of resources. Go for the newest processor you can afford, as a new processor can provide excellent value, and it can give you a resounding return on investment. The same thing is valid for a GPU. A lot of games that work on a Mac will work on an older GPU, but those are usually older titles anyway.

When you want to play the newer games, a new GPU will make the experience smoother. RAM-wise, you want to have as much memory as you can. The bare minimum is 8 GB, but the more you have, the better. In regards to storage, keep in mind that some of the modern games require quite a bit of space. In general, the more storage space you have, the better it will be. And that’s certainly a very important aspect to keep in mind.

Free up unused space

Go to the System Settings and then enter Storage. Here you will be able to see exactly what occupies your space. You can choose to check and delete items from the Downloads folder, remove any old videos, images or apps. Freeing up unused space can be a great idea because it will help with Mac optimization. And yes, you will have more space for your games, which is always a great idea to consider!

Use a Mac cleanup tool

The role of such a tool is to help you remove any temporary files, trash and any type of stuff that would eat up space on your Mac. We highly recommend using such a cleanup tool often, because it is effective and it can provide a very good value and result in the long run. Plus, since you can automate this process, it’s going to improve the overall performance of your device. So it’s a win-win situation, even if you just use the device for gaming.

Delete apps you don’t use

If you have apps that you rarely use, try to delete them. Those will eat up system resources, and you could use those resources for gaming. That’s why you always want to enter the Applications folder and remove those apps that you’re not going to use anyway. Sure, you can try to leave apps that you might use at some point. But in the end, you want to focus on apps that you want to use now. If they don’t offer any help and they just waste resources, it’s a much better idea to delete those apps right away.

Keep your Mac up to date

Updates will always provide various optimizations and improvements. Those can make your games run better. So it’s a very good idea to try and install those Mac OS updates as often as you can. Remember, these updates are provided regularly, so doing these updates as soon as they arrive can be a great thing. Just make sure that you also update your games as well. Sometimes, games will receive various updates, including bugfixes and optimizations!

Optimize your display settings

It’s one of those things that a lot of people don’t really care for on a Mac. But if you want to play games, it does make sense to optimize those settings the best way that you can. Stick with the default resolution, but do change to the best refresh rate offered, maybe even ProMotion if that’s available.

Disable any background processes

Games are usually resource-intensive, so you want to provide them all the system resources that you can. Disabling the background processes can be a great idea, since it will allow you to harness all those system resources for the game. Quit any processes and apps that you don’t need while gaming. And yes, if you play on a MacBook, or even an iMac, you want them to have adequate ventilation.

It’s always important to make sure that you optimize your Mac for gaming, should you choose to focus on that type of experience. There will always be demanding situations and challenges that arise when it comes to playing games on a Mac. But in the end, it is possible to do that, and the experience can be very good. Just make sure you disable those background processes, update your device, and also use an SSD. Those things can help improve your gaming experience more than you might expect!
