67% of Organizations Faces Cyber Attack in The Past 12 Months – New Report

Cyber attacks continue to plague organizations worldwide, with a staggering 67% of businesses reporting they faced at least one attack in the past year, according to the newly released Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report 2024.

This marks the fourth consecutive annual increase in attack frequency, rising from 53% in the previous report and highlighting the escalating digital threat landscape facing companies of all sizes across eight international markets.

The comprehensive study examined cyber security trends across the UK, US, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and Ireland, revealing not only more frequent attacks but increasingly sophisticated ones as well.

The surge in attacks comes amid rapid technological advancements and continuing economic uncertainty, with 66% of surveyed businesses reporting an increase in cyber incidents over the previous 12 months.

Most concerning, 17% of organizations experienced more than 50 separate attacks during this period, demonstrating the persistent and determined nature of today’s threat actors.

The financial repercussions have been substantial, with 13% of attack victims estimating losses between $100,000 and $499,000 from a single incident.

HISCOX analysts identified business email compromise as the most common entry point for attackers for the second consecutive year.

Their research specifically highlighted payment diversion fraud as accounting for 57% of reported attacks in the UK market.

The analysts further noted the human element remains a critical vulnerability, with 46% of organizations that experienced breaches reporting that an employee served as the initial point of entry for attackers.

Despite growing awareness of cyber threats, many organizations remain unprepared to defend themselves effectively.

One-third of business leaders (34%) admitted their organization lacks adequate preparation to handle cyber attacks, while 26% stated they don’t have sufficient resources to manage cyber risks effectively.

This preparedness gap exists despite three-quarters of firms considering cyber resilience very important to their overall business strategy.

Reputation Damage: The Hidden Cost of Cyber Attacks

Beyond the immediate financial losses, the Hiscox report reveals the devastating reputational consequences of cyber incidents.

The data shows 61% of business leaders believe the reputational damage from a cyber attack would significantly harm their business, while 64% fear losing business if they fail to handle client and partner data securely.

These concerns prove well-founded, as 47% of organizations that experienced attacks reported greater difficulty attracting new customers (up from 20% the previous year), 43% lost existing customers (up from 21%), and 21% lost business partners (compared to 16% previously).

The report highlights how breaches undermine stakeholder confidence at multiple levels. When customer data is compromised, the trust violation extends beyond immediate financial implications, creating lasting damage to brand perception.

This explains why 35% of UK business leaders specifically identified avoiding reputational damage as a primary driver behind their cyber risk management plans.

Organizations are responding by investing more heavily in employee awareness programs, recognizing the human element remains both their greatest vulnerability and first line of defense.

The report found 65% of leaders have invested in additional cyber security training specifically for remote employees, while 72% now employ a dedicated cybersecurity leader-a figure that rises to 97% among companies with over 1,000 employees.

This focus on human factors comes as organizations navigate the additional complexities of remote work arrangements, with more than half of UK businesses reporting they feel more vulnerable due to distributed workforces.
