Audi & Volkswagen Data Breach – Customers Personal & Sensitive Information Leaked

Hackers obtained customers’ personal information of customers and interested buyers from Audi, Volkswagen, and some authorized dealers in the United States and Canada.

On March 10, 2021, the company identified unauthorized third-party access to the servers of certain customer information.

The leaked information includes the data gathered for sales and marketing purposes from 2014 to 2019 and the data found to be accessed between August 2019 and May 2021 when the data left unsecured. The breach impact 90,184 individuals.

  • Security or social insurance numbers
  • Account or loan numbers
  • Tax identification numbers

Now the company has informed authorities, including law enforcement and regulators. “We are working with external cybersecurity experts to assess and respond to this situation and have taken steps to address the matter with the vendor.”

The company alerted customers to watch for spam emails or other communications requesting sensitive personal information or other emails that opening links or attachments. There is a possibility that the data could be misused by attackers to conduct targeted cyber attacks.

This is the third data breach reported following McDonald’s & EA Games.
