Wireshark, the world-renowned network protocol analyzer, has just released its latest version, 4.4.1. This update focuses on enhancing user experience by addressing several critical vulnerabilities and bugs while also refining existing features to ensure smoother operation for network professionals.
Wireshark is a free and open-source network analyzer that captures and displays real-time details of network traffic.
It is widely used for troubleshooting network issues, analyzing network protocols, and ensuring network security. The tool is hosted by the Wireshark Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes protocol analysis education.
Wireshark 4.4.1 addresses key vulnerabilities that could potentially disrupt network analysis activities. Notably, it fixes issues such as the ITS dissector crash (wnpa-sec-2024-12) and crashes related to AppleTalk and RELOAD Framing dissectors (wnpa-sec-2024-13).
These fixes are crucial for maintaining the integrity and reliability of network analysis tasks.
In addition to security patches, the update resolves a range of bugs that have been affecting users. These include issues with corrupt interface handling during live capture (Issue 11176), decoding errors in ITS CPM version 2.1.1 (Issue 19886), and problems with the Extcap toolbar when new interfaces are added (Issue 19854).

Other notable fixes include correcting build errors from previous versions and addressing GUI lags caused by NetworkManager’s interference with 802.11 monitor mode (Issue 20090).
While Wireshark 4.4.1 does not introduce new protocols, it updates support for a wide array of existing ones. These include AppleTalk, BGP, Bluetooth L2CAP, HTTP, Kerberos, and many others, ensuring that users can analyze a broad spectrum of network data with improved accuracy.
A significant change in this release is the modification of TShark’s syntax for dumping fields with specific prefixes. The command has been updated from -G fields prefix to -G fields,prefix, allowing better integration with configuration profiles.
Wireshark 4.4.1 enhances support for various capture file formats such as BLF, CLLOG, CommView, ERF, and pcap. However, no new file format decoding support is introduced in this release.
The previous major release, Wireshark 4.4.0, brought significant improvements like automatic profile switching based on display filters, enhanced graphing dialogs including I/O Graphs and TCP Stream Graphs, and support for Lua 5.3 and 5.4 scripting languages. These features laid the groundwork for the incremental improvements seen in version 4.4.1.
