New Windows AI Feature Records All Your PC Activities

Recall AI-powered Feature

At Build 2024, Microsoft unveiled “Recall” for Copilot+ PCs, it’s an AI feature that records and allows searching all user activities on Windows 11, including apps, meetings, and websites. 

Raising privacy concerns, Recall takes an encrypted screen capture snapshots every few seconds, stored locally.

Users can then search through this visual timeline or use AI transcription to find specific moments from meetings or videos they have engaged with on their PC.

While potentially useful for retrieving context, Recall’s comprehensive activity logging sparks monitoring and data privacy debates.

The recall of Microsoft’s software has serious implications for users’ privacy. Despite the local encryption claimed, the potential to monitor all activities done online in detail and watch all activities done on the personal computer is worrying. 

Recall can dig up account information that can not only ruin your browser history but also put journalists, dissidents or any person who might be seen as a threat by an authoritarian command at risk.

Recall’s surveillance appears much more extensive than the productivity gains it is supposed to yield, consequently establishing a precedent where tech firms accept such tracking norms.

To deal with concerns about privacy, Microsoft claims that Recall data is kept local and encrypted, linked only to the user’s account profile, not shared with any other users or Microsoft, nor used for ad targeting. 

Users can stop recording, erase content, and exclude particular apps or websites. Recall does not support private browsing sessions or DRM content. 

This is because it does not actively hide sensitive on-screen data like passwords or financial information during regular recording. 

Although Microsoft characterizes Recall as a privately used tool to boost productivity.

Microsoft’s new Recall feature takes continuous snapshots of user activities for later playback, similar to the discontinued Timeline for Windows 10, and like the third-party Rewind app for Mac. 

It requires new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chips with a neural processing unit and at least 256GB storage with 25GB allocated for up to 3 months of snapshots. 

Recall is currently in preview as Microsoft collects feedback and develops enterprise controls.
