Windows 11 Start Menu Now Let Users Access Their Android & iPhones

Microsoft has unveiled a significant update to Windows 11, enhancing the Start menu with seamless integration for both Android and iPhone devices. 

This feature, previously exclusive to Android users, now extends to iPhone owners, allowing them to access their phone’s features directly from the Start menu. 

The update aims to simplify cross-platform connectivity and improve productivity for users managing multiple devices.

By selecting the device type (Android or iPhone) in the right-side pane of the Start menu and following on-screen instructions, users can quickly link their devices to their PCs.

iPhone-Specific Features

For the first time, iPhone users can access features such as battery status, connectivity information, messages, calls, and recent activities directly from the Start menu. This mirrors the functionality previously available for Android users.

Building on a feature previewed in December 2024, users can now share files between their Windows PC and Android or iPhone devices seamlessly. A “Send Files” option in the Start menu facilitates quick transfers without needing additional software.

Technical Requirements

To utilize these features, users must meet specific software and hardware requirements:

• Windows 11 Insider Preview Build: Version 4805 or higher in the Beta Channel or 26120.3000 or higher in the Dev Channel.
• Phone Link App: Version 1.24121.30.0 or later.
• Hardware Compatibility: PCs must support Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) and be signed in with a Microsoft account.
• Exclusions: These features are not available on PCs running Windows 11 Pro Education or Education SKUs.

Once connected, users can manage their phone’s features directly from the Start menu:

• View battery status and connectivity.
• Access messages and call logs.
• Monitor recent activities.
• Share files between devices using the “Send Files” option.

The integration leverages Microsoft’s Adaptive Cards technology, which powers other Windows widgets. This suggests potential future expansion for third-party developers to create custom widgets for enhanced functionality.

Availability

Currently, these updates are rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels. A broader release is expected in the coming months as Microsoft gathers user feedback and refines the experience.

Microsoft encourages users to share their feedback via the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Phone Link. 

The updated Start menu integration underscores Microsoft’s commitment to improving cross-device connectivity and user convenience.

By extending these capabilities to iPhone users, Windows 11 positions itself as a versatile platform for managing both work and personal tasks seamlessly across devices.
