Offensive Security Released Win-KeX 2.0 – Kali Desktop for Windows

Recently, after great success with the Win-KeX’s first version, now offensive security has released Win-KeX 2.0. Win-KeX implements a Kali Desktop experience for Windows Subsystem for Linux, and now its version 2.0 comes with all sought of useful features and fix for the issues that exist in the earlier versions.

Win-KeX Version 2.0

Many of you might be very familiar with Win-KeX, but some people are not aware of this; it offers graphical desktop surroundings of Kali Linux operating on the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2). It aims to implement a graphical interface and enhance the Kali Linux experience on WSL 2.

The Win-Kex 2.0 version added support for simultaneous sessions. This implies that now users can run Win-KeX GUI sessions as a deprived user, root user, and Seamless session mode. 

Operating in Seamless Mode is more impressive, as the former Windows mode operates the Kali Linux desktop session in a separate window. And not only this, but the seamless mode lets the apps operating on Windows and Linux concurrently.

Key features of Win-KeX v2.0

The key features of Win-KeX version 2.0 are mentioned below:-

• Win-KeX SL (Seamless Edition) – no more borders
• Sound maintenance
• Multi-session support
• KeX sessions can be operated as root
• Capable of launching “kex” from everywhere: No more cd-ing into the Kali filesystem required.
• Shared clipboard: Cut and paste content among kale and Windows apps.

Win-KeX 2.0 Now supports Two Dedicated Modes

The Win-Kex version 2.0 now supports the two dedicated modes, and here they are mentioned below:-

Win-KeX Window Mode: This mode is the classic Win-KeX look that observes with one devoted Window for the Kali Linux desktop. Here to activate it, the users have to type “kex –win -s” to launch the Win-Kex Window.

Win-KeX SL Mode: This mode comes up with seamless integration of Kali Linux into the Windows desktop along with the Windows Start menu at the bottom and the Kali panel at the top of the screen. And here to activate it, the users have to type “kex –sl –s” to launch the Win-KeX SL mode.

Win-KeX 2.0 now supports concurrent sessions

The new Win-KeX version 2.0 supports concurrent sessions, and they are:-

• Win-KeX as an unprivileged user
• Win-KeX as a root user
• Win-KeX SL

Installation process of Win-KeX

Now, if you are thinking that how to install the latest version of Win-Kex, then don’t worry, as it’s very easy to do so. Here, the users have to follow the command in a Kali WSL installation that we have mentioned below.

sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt install -y kali-win-kex

Apart from this, if you want to operate the new version of Win-Kex, then you must use the Windows 10 version 2004, or you can use any higher supporting WSL2. Microsoft has recently backported WSL2 support for former Windows 10 1903 and 1909. 

As every user are now demanding and fascinating the Win-KeX new version, that’s why the WSL2 support will help the users to run Kali Linux using Win-KeX in Windows 10 pre-2020 version.
