phpMyAdmin Vulnerability Let Hackers Trigger XSS Attack With Malicious Tables

A moderate-severity Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified in phpMyAdmin, a widely used open-source tool for managing MySQL databases. 

This flaw, tracked as CVE-2025-24530, affects versions 5.x prior to 5.2.2 and is linked to the “Check tables” feature. 

The vulnerability allows attackers to exploit improperly sanitized table or database names to execute malicious JavaScript in the context of a victim’s browser.

The vulnerability stems from insufficient input validation in the “Check tables” functionality of phpMyAdmin. 

By crafting a malicious table or database name, an attacker can inject JavaScript code that executes when a user interacts with the affected feature. 

This XSS attack could lead to unauthorized actions, session hijacking, or data theft, compromising the integrity and confidentiality of the database.

The issue pertains to improper neutralization of input during web page generation. The flaw has been rated as moderately severe due to its potential impact on data security and user accounts.

While exploitation requires some level of user interaction (e.g., accessing the “Check tables” feature), the attack can be executed remotely. This makes it particularly dangerous for publicly accessible phpMyAdmin installations.

The phpMyAdmin team has credited “bluebird” for reporting this vulnerability and has provided detailed guidance on applying the patch.

This vulnerability impacts all phpMyAdmin versions in the 5.x series prior to 5.2.2. Users running these versions are strongly advised to update immediately.

Mitigation And Solution

To address this issue, users should upgrade to phpMyAdmin version 5.2.2 or later. The updated version includes a patch that resolves the input sanitization issue in the “Check tables” feature. 

For users unable to update immediately, implementing additional security measures such as IP whitelisting or restricting access to phpMyAdmin can reduce exposure.

Administrators are urged to act promptly to secure their systems against this vulnerability by upgrading their installations or applying necessary patches.
