OneBlood Hit by Ransomware Attack, Software Systems Affected

OneBlood, the not-for-profit blood center serving much of the southeastern United States, has been hit by a ransomware attack that has impacted its software systems.

The organization works closely with cybersecurity specialists and federal, state, and local agencies to address the situation.

“OneBlood takes the security of our network extremely seriously,” said Susan Forbes, OneBlood’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Relations.

“Our team reacted quickly to assess our systems and began an investigation to confirm the full nature and scope of the event. Our comprehensive response efforts are ongoing, and we are working diligently to restore full functionality to our systems as expeditiously as possible.”

Manual Processes Implemented Amid Reduced Capacity

Despite the attack, OneBlood remains operational but is functioning at a significantly reduced capacity. The organization has implemented manual processes and procedures to continue its critical work of collecting, testing, and distributing blood.

Forbes explained, “Manual processes take significantly longer to perform and impact inventory availability.” To manage the blood supply effectively, OneBlood has asked the more than 250 hospitals it serves to activate their critical blood shortage protocols and maintain that status for the time being.

In response to the crisis, the national blood community has mobilized to support OneBlood and the hospitals and patients it serves.

Blood centers nationwide are sending blood and platelets to OneBlood, and the AABB Disaster Task Force is coordinating national resources to assist with additional blood products.

All blood types are needed, but there is an urgent need for O-positive, O-negative, and Platelet donations. Forbes emphasized that “the blood supply cannot be taken for granted.”

“The situation we are dealing with is ongoing. If you are eligible to donate, we urge you to please make an appointment to donate as soon as possible.”

As OneBlood continues navigating this challenging situation, the organization remains committed to saving lives through blood donation. The collaboration and support from the national blood community highlight the importance of unity and resilience in times of crisis.
