Microsoft’s comprehensive suite of online services, including the central Office.com portal, is currently experiencing a significant and widespread outage, leaving millions of users unable to access essential productivity applications.
The company has confirmed the issue and is actively investigating the root cause to restore service as quickly as possible.
The disruption, which began escalating earlier this evening, is preventing users globally from accessing the web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other key components of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
Users attempting to visit Office.com or log into their accounts are being met with error messages, preventing access to their documents, emails, and collaborative workflows.
The outage has brought productivity to a halt for countless businesses, educational institutions, and individual users who depend on Microsoft’s cloud for their daily operations.
Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), are filled with reports from frustrated users who cannot access critical files or communicate through their Outlook accounts.
The impact is especially severe for organizations that rely exclusively on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, as core business functions have been rendered inaccessible.
While some users may be able to use desktop applications, any functionality requiring a connection to cloud services like OneDrive or SharePoint remains unavailable.
Initial reports suggest the outage is global, with users from North America, Europe, and Asia confirming their inability to connect to Microsoft 365 services.
The issue appears to stem from a core failure affecting authentication or service delivery for the entire online suite. The broad scope indicates a significant problem within Microsoft’s backend infrastructure rather than a localized network issue.
Microsoft officially acknowledged the problem on its service health status page and through its official communication channels.
At this time, the cause of the outage is unknown. Microsoft engineers are working to diagnose the problem, which could be anything from a faulty configuration change to a critical hardware or network failure.
Update : Microsoft 365 team said that “a specific configuration change that started deployment at approximately the same time we received the initial reports of impact. Out of an abundance of caution, we’re reverting the update as a potential mitigation strategy. Additionally, we’re continuing to analyze network traces, authentication flows and Content Delivery Network (CDN) interactions to determine the root cause”.
