Notepad++ v8.7.2 Launched With New Pin Tab Feature Option

Notepad++ has released version 8.7.2 with a highly anticipated new feature “Pin Tab,” it’s a popular free source code editor and Notepad replacement.

This update, which became available on November 27, 2024, brings several enhancements and bug fixes to improve user experience.

The key features and improvements introduced with this new version are:-

  • Pin Tab Functionality
  • Tab Bar Enhancements
  • Additional Features and Bug Fixes

The most significant addition in this release is the Pin Tab feature, which allows users to pin important tabs for quick access.

This functionality works similarly to pinned tabs in web browsers, bringing frequently used tabs to the leftmost position for easy accessibility. While the Notepad++ developers noted that this feature is enabled by default but can be easily disabled through the Preferences dialog.

Notepad++ v8.7.2 Other Features & Bug Fixes

Notepad++ 8.7.2 introduces several improvements to the tab bar:-

  • Inactive tabs now hide their close and pin buttons, reducing visual clutter.
  • Hovering over inactive tabs darkens them, providing visual feedback and revealing the pin and close buttons.
  • Pinned tabs display only the pin icon, further distinguishing them from unpinned tabs.

The update also addresses several user-reported issues and adds new functionality:

  • Fixed a bug that prevented copying text from search results using Ctrl+C.
  • Added a “Minimize / Close to” option for the system tray, giving users more control over window management.
  • Implemented the ability to open or copy selected files from search results.
  • Resolved an issue where the replace field would lose focus when switching back to Notepad++.

The new Pin Tab feature is expected to significantly improve workflow for many users, especially those working with multiple files simultaneously.

While some users may find the implementation different from pinned tabs in web browsers, it represents a step forward in Notepad++’s functionality.

Notepad++ 8.7.2 is available for download from the official website for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems, as well as ARM-based Windows PCs.

Existing users should receive an update notification within a few days of the release.

The Pin Tab feature, along with the various bug fixes and improvements, solidifies Notepad++’s position as a versatile and user-friendly text editor for both developers and casual users.
