Microsoft Teams Automatically Set Work Locations Based on Organization’s Wi-Fi Network

Microsoft has announced a significant enhancement to Teams that will automatically detect and set employees’ work locations based on their connection to organizational Wi-Fi networks.

Summary
1. Microsoft Teams will automatically set employees' work locations based on their connection to the organization's Wi-Fi network, starting September 2025.
2. The feature is available for Teams on Windows and Mac desktops and requires IT admin configuration.
3. Work locations are updated only during working hours (as set in Outlook Calendar) and are cleared afterward to maintain privacy.
4. IT admins can enable and map Wi-Fi networks to buildings using the New-CsTeamsWorkLocationDetectionPolicy PowerShell cmdlet.

This innovative feature, scheduled for general availability in early September 2025, represents a major advancement in workplace technology integration, eliminating the need for manual location updates while providing organizations with improved visibility into employee presence and workspace utilization.

Automatic Work Location Detection

The new work location detection capability will be available for both Teams for Windows desktop and Teams for Mac desktop platforms, marking a substantial improvement over current manual processes.

The global rollout is beginning in early September 2025 and is expected to be completed by mid-September 2025.

This opt-in feature fundamentally transforms how Teams manages user location data by leveraging network connectivity as a reliable indicator of physical presence.

The system intelligently maps organizational Wi-Fi networks to specific buildings, enabling automatic location updates when employees connect their devices to corporate networks.

Additionally, the feature extends beyond Wi-Fi detection to include peripheral device mapping, such as monitors and other workplace equipment, providing multiple touchpoints for accurate location identification.

The technical foundation of this feature relies on advanced network mapping algorithms that correlate Wi-Fi network identifiers with predefined building locations.

Organizations must configure these mappings through the New-CsTeamsWorkLocationDetectionPolicy PowerShell cmdlet, which serves as the primary administrative interface for managing automatic location detection settings.

The system architecture incorporates intelligent time-based controls, preventing location updates outside configured working hours as defined in users’ Microsoft Outlook Calendar settings.

This sophisticated approach ensures that personal device usage outside work hours doesn’t trigger inappropriate location changes.

Furthermore, the feature automatically clears work location data at the end of designated working hours, maintaining privacy boundaries and accurate presence information.

IT administrators can leverage the unified policy framework that governs both Wi-Fi and peripheral-based detection, streamlining configuration management across different detection methods.

The CsTeamsWorkLocationDetectionPolicy provides granular control over feature activation, allowing organizations to customize deployment based on specific departmental or security requirements.

Preparation Requirements

While automatic work location detection remains disabled by default, Microsoft strongly recommends organizational adoption due to significant user experience improvements.

The feature eliminates the administrative burden of manual location management while providing enhanced accuracy for location-based services and compliance reporting.

Organizations must proactively configure tenant settings before the September rollout, including mapping Wi-Fi networks to building identifiers and establishing peripheral device associations.

Microsoft plans to release comprehensive documentation updates before the feature’s general availability, providing detailed implementation guidance for IT departments.

This development represents Microsoft’s continued commitment to intelligent workplace solutions, offering organizations powerful tools for modern hybrid work management while maintaining user privacy and administrative control through robust policy frameworks.
