Microsoft 365 Search Outage Disrupts SharePoint, OneDrive, and Outlook Users Worldwide

Microsoft is actively managing a service disruption that has left a subset of enterprise users unable to search for content across SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, and Outlook desktop.

The incident, tracked in administrative portals under reference MO1456424, was confirmed after users reported unresponsive and failing search queries beginning Monday, August 17, 2026.

As technical teams work to stabilize backend systems, the disruption continues to affect organizations that rely on centralized cloud search indexes.

Microsoft 365 Search Outage Disrupts Global Users

According to Microsoft’s service advisory, the issue is not the result of a cyberattack or malicious activity, but rather stems from an internal software deployment.

The rollout introduced a resource-utilization inefficiency that overloaded the backend systems responsible for indexing, parsing, and retrieving content.

This bottleneck created a ripple effect across connected workloads, degrading search responsiveness for user accounts routed through the impacted infrastructure clusters. The event reflects similar engineering challenges observed during a broader Microsoft 365 outage caused by configuration updates.

Microsoft clarified that the disruption is not universal across all tenants. The impact remains confined to specific user groups served by the strained backend nodes, so severity varies on region and mailbox routing.

While geographic specifics and tenant-tier boundaries have not been formally detailed, engineering teams continue to evaluate telemetry across active clusters. Engineering teams have developed a software fix and are deploying it across affected server infrastructure to relieve compute and indexing pressure.

Microsoft is executing a phased rollout to monitor system stability in real time and prevent unexpected regressions across tenant workloads. Similar precautions were previously deployed during widespread Outlook service disruptions to ensure infrastructure stability under high load.

As detailed in the incident advisory published by Microsoft Service Health, engineers have scheduled a formal evaluation checkpoint for Friday, August 21, 2026, at 4:00 AM UTC. Until the remediation fully propagates, the incident remains classified as active in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Search functionality remains a cornerstone of enterprise operations, enabling employees to locate shared documents across OneDrive repositories, navigate SharePoint libraries, and retrieve critical correspondence within Outlook.

Even partial service degradations can disrupt daily business workflows, delay time-sensitive approvals, and generate high volumes of support tickets for enterprise help desks.

These backend bottlenecks mirror the cascading effects seen in a recent Microsoft DNS outage where infrastructure strain propagated across core services.
