Lithuanian Man Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison For Stealing Over $120 Million From Google and Facebook Employees

Lithuanian man, Evaldas Rimasauskas, sentenced to 5 years in prison for stealing over $120 million by running a fraudulent business email compromise scheme targeting Google and Facebook employees.

He was arrested on March 21, 2017, for conducting business email compromise scheme targeting two companies and tricking them wiring the funds to bank accounts controlled by him. He carried out attacks between 2013 to 2015.

According to the indictment, “Evaldas Rimasauskas carried out a business email compromise scheme creatively targeting two very specific victim companies and then funneled those funds to bank accounts around the globe.”

Rimasauskas registered companies mimicking the popular brands and sent fraudulent emails to employees and agents of the Victim Companies who use to conduct multimillion-dollar transactions.

He circulated the funds to different bank accounts created around the world including, Latvia, Cyprus, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary, and Hong Kong.

RIMASAUSKAS create forged invoices, contracts, and letters that falsely appeared to have been executed and signed by executives and agents of the Victim Companies, which embeds fake corporate stamps embossed with the Victim Companies’ names, to be submitted to banks in support of the large volume of funds that were fraudulently transmitted via wire transfer.

“This case should serve as a wake-up call to all companies – even the most sophisticated – that they too can be victims of phishing attacks by cybercriminals. And this arrest should serve as a warning to all cybercriminals that we will work to track them down,” said Joon H. Kim.

Along with 5 years of jail, he needs to survive two years of supervised release, “to forfeit $49,738,559.41, and to pay restitution of $26,479,079.24.”
