Flipper Zero Firmware 1.0 Released After 3 Years of Development

After three years of intensive development, Flipper Zero has released its highly anticipated firmware version 1.0. This major milestone marks the completion of numerous features that have been in the works since the project’s inception.

“We have completed work on many features that have been in development for three years and are now stable,” the Flipper Zero team said.

The 1.0 release introduces several significant enhancements to the Flipper Zero ecosystem:

  • 3rd-party apps: Dynamic app loading support allows users to install hundreds of community-developed apps from the Apps Catalog, with the number of apps continuing to grow.
  • New NFC subsystem: Completely rewritten from scratch, resulting in a significant increase in card reading speed, support for new NFC card types, and a plugin system for user card parsers.
  • JavaScript support: Developers can now create apps for Flipper Zero using the widely-used JavaScript programming language.
  • General system improvements: Battery life has been extended to 1 month in standby mode, Bluetooth data transfer speed with Android devices has increased by up to 2x, and firmware updates now upload via Bluetooth 40% faster.

Dynamic App Loading and Apps Catalog

One of the most notable additions in firmware 1.0 is the dynamic app loading subsystem. This feature allows Flipper Zero to run applications directly from FAP files (Flipper Application Package) stored on the microSD card, saving space on the system’s flash memory.

The introduction of dynamic app loading has spurred the developer community to create hundreds of applications. To make these apps easily accessible, Flipper Zero has launched the Apps Catalog, where users can find and install open-source apps created by enthusiasts.

JavaScript Support and NFC Improvements

Firmware 1.0 also brings JavaScript support to Flipper Zero, enabling developers to create apps using one of the most popular programming languages. This addition simplifies the development process and eliminates the need for a complex setup of the C/C++ development environment.

The NFC subsystem has undergone a complete overhaul, resulting in improved performance and easier support for new NFC card protocols. The new architecture is FreeRTOS-friendly, has a streamlined code structure, and introduces dynamic card data parsers.

Updating to Firmware 1.0

Flipper Zero users are encouraged to update their devices to firmware version 1.0 to take advantage of all the new features and improvements. The update can be performed via Bluetooth using the Flipper Mobile App or via USB using the qFlipper app on a PC.

Flipper Zero Update

With the release of firmware 1.0, Flipper Zero has taken a significant leap forward. It now offers users an enhanced experience and provides developers with new tools to create innovative applications.

As the community continues to grow and contribute, Flipper Zero is poised to become an even more versatile and powerful device in the years to come.
