DuckDuckGo Rolls Out New Scam Blocker to Protect Users from Online Threats

DuckDuckGo has significantly upgraded its Scam Blocker feature to protect users against a broader range of digital threats, including sham e-commerce platforms, fake cryptocurrency exchanges, and “scareware” tactics. 

This enhancement comes as consumers reported $12.5 billion in fraud losses to the FTC in 2024 alone. 

Unlike competitors relying on Google’s tools, DuckDuckGo’s proprietary system processes threat data anonymously via cybersecurity partner Netcraft, ensuring no user browsing data is shared with third parties.

Expanded Protection Against Diverse Scams

The upgraded Scam Blocker now targets:

  • Fraudulent investment/crypto sites: Mimicking legitimate platforms to steal financial data.
  • Scareware: Fake virus alerts pressuring users into purchasing bogus security software.
  • Phishing hubs: Impersonating trusted services to harvest login credentials.
  • Malware distributors: Auto-downloading harmful files during site visits.
  • Tracker-powered malicious ads: Compromising devices via ad networks without clicks.

These additions address the 0.1% of uncommon threats missed by standard blockers. 

When detecting risks, DuckDuckGo halts page loads and displays warnings, allowing safe navigation away from threats.

Anonymous Threat Detection Architecture

Scam Blocker operates through a privacy-centric two-layer system:

  1. Local threat list: Updated every 20 minutes from Netcraft’s real-time scam database, stored directly on devices.
  2. Encrypted verification: For rare threats (<0.1% incidence), DuckDuckGo servers perform anonymous checks without third-party data sharing.

This approach contrasts with browsers like Chrome and Safari, which send user data to Google’s Safe Browsing service. DuckDuckGo’s solution requires no accounts and activates by default across its free desktop/mobile browsers. 

Privacy Pro subscribers extend these protections to all device traffic, even when using other browsers via the DuckDuckGo VPN.

The expansion underscores DuckDuckGo’s commitment to preemptive privacy: stopping data collection before it starts, even as scammers evolve their tactics. With online fraud losses soaring, these enhancements provide critical safeguards against increasingly sophisticated digital deception.
