ChatGPT Down For Thousands Of Users Worldwide – Latest Outage Updates

ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, experienced a significant outage on April 2, 2025. The outage impacted thousands of users globally and left many users unable to access the service.

Users in India, the United States, and other countries reported widespread disruptions, with a surge in reports around 7:00 PM Indian Standard Time (IST). This timing correlates with 8:43 AM Eastern Time. 

According to DownDetector, a service that tracks online outages, there was a sharp increase in user-reported problems, indicating a substantial service interruption affecting a large number of users.

Social media platforms were flooded with reports from users experiencing difficulties accessing the AI chatbot.

Frustrated users took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences and potential workarounds. The hashtag #ChatGPTDown began trending as users shared their frustrations and humorous memes about the situation.

OpenAI’s Response

OpenAI has acknowledged the ongoing issues and is currently investigating degraded performance and increased error rates.

According to their official status page, the disruptions have been ongoing for at least 10 minutes as of 7:40 PM on April 2, 2025. The outage primarily impacts ChatGPT, with three components experiencing disruptions. 

While the web version remains operational, mobile users on both iOS and Android have reported problems.

The exact cause of the outage remains unclear. However, there is speculation that the issue may be related to the recent rollout of a new Ghibli-style image generation tool for free users.
